Oh well, i will know next time. Anyways, how do you know if you need a trans cooler?

How does transmission fluid get into radiator cooler? Nope, a dealer said my radiator was “gone”, and that transmission fluid may have mixed with the coolant, and they have to flush the tranny dollars worth of tranny fluid to ensure it is ok, add a new radiator, coolant, and a transmission filter, plus labor and you get worth of work-is this… accurate?
Plus, a new radiator. So, I’m afraid it’s possible.

Transmission Cooler June 1st, , Air flow through the radiator depends on the size and type of fans but as Jeff says the center is usually the dead spot hwen the car isn’t moving and the fan s are running. My trans guy says the tranny really can’t be too cool unless you live somewhere where it hits zero and the car is outside as there isn’t the same kind of viscosity issues with modern trans fluids as there can be with much heavier engine oils.
And, while and while a lquid to liquid is far more thermally efficient having the trans at the same temp as the engine coolant may not be ideal. For our typical “muscle car” drag racing, cold engine, fully warm oil and a cool tarns are pretty much ideal if you can get there. As to when you need an auxillary cooler the reality is the decision should be trans fluid temp driven. If you don’t have a trans fluid temp guage, a good proxy is one of those infrared temp guns almost everybody has these days.
I have to run a trans blanket and it has a very negative effect on trans temp surprise!

First there is airflow into, through, and from the heat exchangers. Mounting an external cooler in front of an engine radiator obviously imposes a restriction to the free flow of air through the radiator. In any event, the expedient practice of attaching an external trans cooler directly to the radiator with zip-ties and no air gap is frowned upon if maximum engine and trans cooling efficiency is the ultimate goal.
When it comes to cooling efficiency, the governing principle is that heat always wants to move from the hotter surface or fluid to the cooler surface or fluid. The greater the temperature differential, the higher the heat transfer and the greater the cooling effect. The larger the surface area, the greater the cooling effect.

But, they’re killing you with labor costs. Just make sure that your car can handle a flush. In some cases, mostly in older vehicles, a true flush on the transmission can cause it to lock up, rendering it useless.

Yes there is some, But it is so fine and so little amount that it wont do anything. And besides, When you cut the line, fluid is coming out of the lines so how can anything get into the lines with oil coming out? Your transmission makes more metal shaving and bigger pieces then a dremal can ever make. Get a fiberglass reinforced disc to cut the line. And go at the highest speed you can without causing a lot of sparks.
Trans cooler line leak. Dec 26 , pm. Now once I take it off the truck and the fluid drips out will I have to “purge” the air out before I hook it back up to the radiator side? Re: Trans cooler line leak. Dec 27 , pm. No purge necessary, it will do it itself. Re: Trans cooler line leak.

No fins, no air flow, just a small tank. I’m sure the thought of maintaining ideal operational temp. This system works well for the street, but doesn’t even begin to address the overheat problems that result, in most cases, from heavy trailer towing and street driven high stall speed torque converters. I’ve never heard of ANYONE complain about moisture building up in an automatic transmission as a direct result of an after market cooling system being too efficient.
If this be the case, an aux cooling system probably isn’t needed on that vehicle to begin with. Where I come from, if a extra cooler is used at all, the trans. I guess with all the variables in question here, a trans. I don’t run a gauge myself, but I can tell by putting my hand on the final cooler that my tranny’s smilin’ and I idle at with a stall..

Our poor Minivan finally died this summer, and we did a lot of research before finally buying a Grand Caravan SXT. I got several quotes, and settled on UHaul who said they could do it all.

For peace of mind, it’s a reasonably inexpensive mod to upgrade the tranny cooler to a larger one and at the same time, add an in-line filter. I upgraded the one in my 01′ Tundra about 6 or 7 years ago. This company is now a preferred vendor and John goes by Transdude here on T. S if you have any questions for him. The Long Tru-cool brand of cooler that he sells has a temperature controlled by-pass, so that when the tranny fluid is cold, it doesn’t run through the cooler.
I would suggest getting the largest cooler that will fit.
